FAREWELL DOUGALS KIRKLAND

“Marilyn Remembered Fan Club” is incredibly sad to learn of the news that Douglas Kirkland has passed away at the age of 88.

Kirkland was a multi-award winning photographer who had a long and illustrious career spanning several decades.  He photographed some of the biggest names in Hollywood including: Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot, Judy Garland and Paul Newman to name but a few.

Of course one of his most legendary models was a certain Miss Marilyn Monroe.  The pair worked together during 1961 and the results were some of the most iconic and breath-taking photos of Marilyn that were ever taken.

Kirkland once said:

“I remember a coversation which I had with her during our first meeting.. she said:
‘When I worked in a factory I’d go to the movies on a Saturday night and sit alone in the back row watching… If the film was good, I mean really great, that movie could carry me through the entire next week on my dreary job in the plant. That’s what I think movies should all be about, giving people that kind of fantasy! Carrying them to other places. That’s what they did for me.’
If I could speak with Marilyn now I would tell her that this is exactly what her enduring movies and images have brought us over the last half a century, the sexy image of innocence and humour with its spin of Fifties kitsch and optimism. But most of all, Marilyn Monroe successfully brought to millions all over the world, the fun, fantasy and glamour which she herself had considered so important as she became one of the most-loved and recognizable icons of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.”

Douglas Kirkland was a great friend to “Marilyn Remebered Fan Club” over the years, speaking at many Memorial Services and always made time for the fans who wanted to chat about his time photographing Marilyn.

We thank Mr Kirkland for his love and friendship over the years, the legacy he has left us and our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time.

MARILYN ON HER CO-STARS

Marilyn on her co-stars Jane Russell (from ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.’) Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall (from ‘How To Marry A Millionaire.’)

” I had worked with a lot of women those first movies– Jane Russell, Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall. They were all wonderful, and I was in such awe of them. They were giants. Everybody expected such fireworks.
Jane and I had an immediate rapport.. I sure learned a lot from her. I also learned through her the importance of having friendly people around, the best artisans in the business.. Howard Hughes saw to that.
Betty was adorable. So funny and so witty, she kept all of us in stitches. Bacall showed a professionalism I found remarkable. She was always prepared, knew her lines and her character, but she wasn’t so rigid that she couldn’t improvise when something unexpected came up.”

Frank & Marilyn: A New Book

New book being released on December 13th 2022, available to pre-order now on Amazon.

“Frank Sinatra! Marilyn Monroe! Never before teamed in a book, yet theirs was a seven-year friendship and on-and-off intimate relationship shrouded in secrecy and fraught with danger.
Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe–here is the first book to bring these two all-American icons together. Their friendship and on-and-off intimate relationship, kept secret because of powerful others in their lives, spanned seven tumultuous years. At one point, he even proposed marriage.
In Frank & Marilyn, we follow Sinatra and Monroe from one explosive relationship to another, their marriages and love affairs eventually leading to a tangled relationship with each other, sparking a nasty rivalry between Frank and Marilyn’s ex-husband (and one-time friend of Frank), Joe DiMaggio.
Frank and Marilyn’s ultimately disastrous relationship with John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert, and their often ruthless family was a fatal move for Marilyn. Her death remains a controversial topic to the present day.
Dedicated biographer and entertainment world insider Edward Z. Epstein has spoken with many people who were familiar with the pair, all of whom talked about the Frank and Marilyn they knew–and the dangers they faced. It’s a fascinating, largely untold story that’s usually glossed over…until now.”

BOOK REVIEW: ‘WHEN MARILYN MET THE QUEEN’

BOOK REVIEW: ‘WHEN MARILYN MET THE QUEEN’

MICHELLE MORGAN, a name that in recent years has become a staple in every Marilyn fan’s vocabulary.  Over on our “Marilyn Remembered” Facebook group, one of the most commonly asked questions is “what is your favourite Marilyn biography?” and an overwhelming amount of people will always answer with the same response: “Marilyn Monroe: Private And Undisclosed” by Michelle Morgan (2007).  Not since Donald Spoto’s 1993 mammoth book titled “Marilyn Monroe: The Biography” have fans universally come together and heaped praise on such a well researched, loving tribute to Monroe’s life and career.

Michelle Morgan is no stranger to researching and writing about Miss Monroe, “When Marilyn Met The Queen”  will be the author’s 6th title release in regards to Monroe’s life and legacy: “Marilyn’s Addresses” (1995) “Marilyn Monroe: Private And Undisclosed” (2007) “Before Marilyn” (2015)  “The Girl: Marilyn Monroe, The Seven Year Itch And The Birth Of An Unlikely Feminist” (2016) and “The Little Book Of Marilyn” (2019) have all received rave reviews and the Marilyn community have come to trust Morgan as one of the most reputable Monroe authors out there.

“When Marilyn Met The Queen” has easily been the most highly anticipated book release on Marilyn’s life and career for a very long time.  It’s hard to believe that such an iconic time period in Marilyn’s life has never been given the treatment it deserves (until now!)  Marilyn Monroe had recently married Arthur Miller and whilst the two were honeymooning in London, Marilyn at the same time was filming “The Prince And The Showgirl,” the now legendary film because of the turbulent time Monroe and her co-star and director Laurence Olivier were going through.  This entire time period of Marilyn’s life is fascinating, so it’s thrilling to finally say we have an entire book dedicated to it!

Of course, this book couldn’t have been written by just anyone… Michelle Morgan brings this time period to life in such a way that you can literally feel her passion for it coming through in each and every page.  She says herself that this book was 30 years in the making… just knowing that makes you love this book all the more!

As with her previous books, Michelle Morgan does her research! and takes the time to interview people who have never been interiewed before!  it’s a real indepth look at Marilyn’s life and career during the 4 month period of her time in England.  You’ll learn so many new tidbits, anecdotes and stories from from people who actually around in 1956 and witnessed first hand what it was like to have a superstar like Monroe amongst them.  And another reason why Michelle Morgan is so good at what she does?  Her sources!  You will literally gasp at the huge amount of sources accumulated for this book, spanning nearly 50 pages!

From a personal point of view, I myself am from the United Kingdom and I LOVE the fact that Marilyn spent as long as she did here.  Michelle does a fantastic job of transporting you to the UK in 1956, making you feel like you were really there with her! I hope that other fellow UK fans take this book to their hearts as much as I have.

This book is an absolute must have for your collection.

In conclusion, a HUGE 5/5 Stars!

❤️The ICONIC and unforgettable "Diamonds Are A ❤️The ICONIC and unforgettable "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend" musical number from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" started filming 70 years ago this week!❤️

George Chakiris, Oscar Winning Actor, was a background dancer for the number, recalled these memories of filming the legendary musical number:

“One of my favorite credits is to say that I worked behind Marilyn Monroe and I love saying that.” George remembers fondly, “ She was phenomenal. She only about twenty six when she made that film but Marilyn was an actress who was deeply concerned about her work and was very conscientious. Let me give you an example of her professionalism: If there ever was a cut for any reason, she never went back to her trailer to check her makeup. She’d be there on her starting mark and ready for the next shot."

"Jack Cole was clearly Marilyn's favourite choreographer. She loved him and he was absolutely perfect for her. He was one of the great choreographers not only for film but for the stage as well, and for the musical numbers he took over the direction. The work was very demanding and he was very demanding.

We rehearsed three weeks or more for the 'Diamonds' sequence, and it took three days to shoot. The last day they went overtime, because Jack had to go back to New York to do a show, so instead of working until 6pm, I believe we worked up until 9pm, and then Jack raced off to the airport.."

⭐️HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLARK GABLE!⭐️ Happy bir ⭐️HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLARK GABLE!⭐️

Happy birthday to the one and only King of Hollywood, Clark Gable on what would have been his 122nd birthday.

Marilyn spoke about her time working with Gable on the set of The Misfits:
“The place was full of so-called men, but Clark was the only one who brought a chair for me between takes. He never got angry with me once for blowing a line or being late or anything — he was a gentlemen. The best.”

Gable was equally as complimentary about Marilyn, he once said:
"Marilyn is a kind of ultimate. She is uniquely feminine. Everything she does is different, strange and exciting, from the way she talks to the way she uses that magnificent torso. She makes a man proud to be a man.”

After Clark’s death on Novemeber 16th, 1960, Marilyn was quoted as saying:
“Clark Gable was one of the finest men I ever met. He was one of the most decent human beings anyone could have encountered anywhere. He was an excellent guy to work with. Knowing him and working with him was a great personal joy. I send all my love to and deepest sympathy to his wife, Kay.”

Happy Birthday Clark, forever the King of Hollywood.

Happy Heavenly Birthday David Wayne! (January 30th Happy Heavenly Birthday David Wayne! (January 30th 1914 - 9th February 1995.)

David Wayne was an American stage and screen actor with a career spanning over 50 years. Marilyn fans will recognise him as being her most frequent co-star, sharing the billing with Marilyn in no less than 4 of her movies:
"As Young As You Feel"
"We're Not Married!"
"O Henry's Full House"
"How To Marry A Millionaire"

With little or no screen time shared in "As Young As You Feel" and "O Henry's Full House," they were on screen lovers in "We're Not Married!" and "How To Marry A Millionaire."

Wayne was quoted as saying (on her performance in "How To Marry A Millionaire")
"Negulesco (the Director) was very good with her and handled her beautifully. Of course she was always late, but I don't think either Betty Grable or Lauren Bacall minded her. They were tough old pros and knew their business. There again, I also recall Marilyn being quite capable in her scenes with the other two girls. I wasn't necessarily in the scene with them, but I'd sit next to Negulesco and watch the three of them work and by that time I thought that Marilyn had got a little technique under her belt."

Happy birthday David! 😃

George spoke about his time photographing Marilyn on the set of the "Seven Year Itch" in 1954 and recalled this:

“Finally when they started filming, (Joe ) DiMaggio walked right off the set, right in the middle of the film shoot, right in front of the camera, everything stopped... And that's where I had my favourite photograph of serious Marilyn, she just stopped. And the light is just coming down, light, light, light, light right on top of her head and it's all black except for her. It was a heavy moment.”

Marilyn Monroe enjoyed a good working relationship with her co-stars, in particular with her leading man, Joseph Cotten:

“I enjoyed her company. I enjoyed working with her,” Cotten said about working with Marilyn Monroe in her first starring role. He said she had an appetite for laughter and was aware of her sense of humor describing her as a “pretty clown. Cotten recalls hearing about her death and receiving a phone call from the Associated Press for a comment. “At first I was sure it had to be an accident. Such buoyancy of spirit, such sparkling anticipation, such a happy and comic attitude would deny support to any theory,” he wrote. “But she had such moments of fear and insecurity….As to all the other furtive theories-cover-up, murder, etc. – I have no knowledge or interest in such sordidness. I knew and acted with Marilyn Monroe. I am proud of having that privilege.”

Marilyn: "I never think about the way I walk. But since I was playing a certain type of girl in the picture who was not myself, and since the way I walked helped emphasize her, I walked as I did.
I'm sure my real-life walk is not exactly the same."
