Today we are remembering the multi talented and legendary Jack Lemmon, who passed away on this date in 2001.

Jack needs absolutely no introduction, as I can safely say that he is regarded as one of Marilyn’s most beloved co-stars having acted alongside her in the iconic 1959 comedy “Some Like It Hot.”
Of course, he was so much more than “Daphne” the bull fiddle playing musician on the run from the Mob.. he had a lengthy and highly asteemed career spanning 6 decades, he was a two time Academy Award winner and up until recently, held the record for the most number of Golden Globe nominations in history (beaten only by Meryl Streep.)

Some of his film credits include: “The Apartment,” “The Odd Couple,” “The China Syndrome,” “Days Of Wine And Roses,” “Save The Tiger,” “Grumpy Old Men” and “Glengarry Glen Ross,” to name but a few.

It’s no coincedence that “Some Like It Hot” Director and writer Billy Wilder once said “Happiness is working with Jack Lemmon”, he was regarded as one of the nicest, hardest working and most respected Actors in the business. In turn, he never had an unkind word to say about any of his fellow co stars throughout the years and always especially spoke highly of Marilyn. He was once quoted as saying:

“Marilyn had an incredible charisma that was so rare, I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it. She had a lot of talent as an actress and she used that talent to the best of her ability as well as her skills as a comedienne, which worked out marvelously for her as with that combined, she created that certain magic on film. I loved working with her and a lot of people say that is clear in our scenes together. I absolutely adored her and we got on wonderfully.”

Ann E. Todd, who appeared in the 1947 film “Dangerous Years” alongside Marilyn Monroe in one of her very first films has died. She was 88.

Todd’s family announced the news on Sunday. She died from complications of dementia on Feb. 7. As a child, Todd starred in nearly 40 films, appearing opposite Hollywood greats like Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Ronald Reagan, Basil Rathbone, Maureen O’Hara, and Edward G. Robinson.  But it is Todd’s role as Doris Martin in the crime drama “Dangerous Years” that Marilyn fans will remember her for.

Remembering the incomparable Bette Davis, who passed away on this date 30 years ago.

Bette Davis had a long and illustrious career spanning 7 decades.  She won the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress‘ twice, was the first person to accrue ten Academy Award nominations for acting, and was the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Insitute.

Some of her most well known films include “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?” “Now Voyager,” “Dark Victory,” and “The Virgin Queen.”  But it is undoubtably her role as Margo Channing in “All About Eve” that film goers and Marilyn fans remember most as Monroe had a small, but most definitely memorable role as the light headed, but charming Miss Caswell.

Davis said in her autobiography about “All About Eve,”
 “I can think of no project that from the outset was as rewarding from the first day to the last. It is easy to understand why. It was a great script, had a great director, and was a cast of professionals all with parts they liked. It was a charmed production from the word go.”

Regarding Miss Monroe:

“I felt a certain envy for what i assumed was Marilyn’s more than obvious popularity. Here was a girl who didn’t know what it was like to be lonely. Then i noticed how shy she was, and i think now that she was as lonely as I was. Lonelier. It was something I felt, a deep well of loneliness she was trying to fill.”

She is buried at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills in California.  Her tombstone reads “She did it the hard way.”

REMEMBERING LAUREN BACALL

Today we are remembering actress Lauren Bacall, who sadly passed away on August 12th 2014.

Bacall was an icon of the silver screen with an illustrious career spanning nearly 7 decades.  Some of her biggest acting screen credits include: “The Big Sleep,” “To Have And Have Not,” “Key Largo” and the 1953 romantic comedy “How To Marry A Millionaire” co starring Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable.

Bacall wrote of her impressions of Monroe and Grable in her autobiography ‘By Myself… And Then Some.’

“I returned home to prepare for my role of Schatze in ‘How To Marry A Millionaire.’  Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable were to be in it as well – it was about three girls looking for millionaire husbands, and it was funny, witty and even touching.  I hadn’t really known either of my co-stars before and hoped the association would be a good one. 
As Cinemascope was a new experiment for everyone, it was difficult.  One had to keep actors moving and not too close together, as the screen was long and narrow.  You shot longer scenes in Cinemascope, five or six pages without a stop, and I liked that – it felt closer to the stage and better for me.  Betty Grable was a funny, outgoing woman, totally professional and easy.  Marilyn was frightened, insecure – trusted only her coach and was always late.  During our scenes she’d look at my forehead instead of my eyes; and at the end of the take, look to her coach, standing behind Jean Negulesco, for approval.  If the headshake was no, she’d insist on another take.  A scene often went to fifteen or more takes, which meant I’d have to be good in all of them as no one knew which one would be used.  Not easy – often irritating.  And yet I couldn’t dislike Marilyn.  She had no meanness in her – no bitchery.  She just had to concentrate on herslf and the people who were there only for her.  I had met her a few times befor, and liked her.  Grable and I decided we’d try and make it easier for her, make her feel she could trust us.  I think she finally did.”

She continued:
‘She came into my dressing room one day and said that what she really wanted was to be in San Francisco with Joe DiMaggio in some spaghetti joint,’ Bacall wrote later. ‘They were not married then. She wanted to know about my children, my home life – was I happy? She seemed envious of that aspect of my life – wistful – hoping to have it herself one day.’

‘There was something sad about her – wanting to reach out – afraid to trust – uncomfortable,’ Bacall observed. ‘She made no effort for others and yet she was nice. I think she did trust me and like me as well as she could anyone whose life must have seemed to her so secure, so solved.

 

She passed away at the age of 89 in her New York apartment in 2014.
