“SOME LIKE IT HOT” AT 60: ORRY-KELLY AND THE OSCARS

2019 is the year that the legendary comedy “Some Like It Hot” celebrates its 60th birthday.  Who can believe it’s been that long since Sugar Kane, Josephine and Daphne came into our lives and taught us that whilst “nobodies perfect!” this film surely is and always will be.. perfection.

Sixty years on, this film still stands the test of time, regularly topping lists of the worlds greatest ever comedies, fans still flock to the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego where the exterior shots of the famous “Seminole Ritz” was filmed and cinemas around the world can still confidently screen this classic, knowing that they will have a packed theatre full of “spills, thrills, laughs and games!”

It has always seemed a miscarriage of justice that whilst “Some Like It Hot” was nominated for 6 Academy Awards (including best actor for Jack Lemmon) it only managed to take home one statue: Best Costume Design for a black and white movie credited to Orry-Kelly.

Orry-Kelly was an Australian-American Hollywood costume designer and until being overtaken by Catherine Martin in 2014, he was Australia’s most prolific Oscar winners, having taken home 3 statues for his work in film (“An American In Paris,” “Les Girls” and “Some Like It Hot.”)

“‘Some Like It Hot’ was to star Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon” the designer wrote in his memoirs: “Women I’ve Undressed”.  “It was to be produced and directed by Billy Wilder.  I had long admired Miss Monroe’s lovely face, her acting – but never her clothes.  I did something I have never done before, I tested for the job.  Armed with half a dozen lifelike sketches of Marilyn Monroe in 1928 period, I descended on the wily Puck-faced Billy Wilder.  Along with his famed biting wit I discovered he had a great taste in almost everything, including women, for his wife Audrey was both beautiful and chic.  Mr Wilder not only engaged me to dress Miss Monroe, but I was to make a couple of belles out of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon too.

I had been warned about Marilyn Monroe.  She was difficult, she was always late, and she was this and that.  I have always felt that if you give a star what is most becoming, even though the style may be new or foreign to her, with tact you can usually win out.  Tact, that nice little clean four letter word.  What an important part it plays in the life of a dress designer.”

You can watch Orry-kelly pick up his Academy Award at the 1960 Oscar Ceremony here:  His speech is short, but memorable!

Orry Kelly sadly passed away on February 27th 1964 of Liver failure at the age of 66.  pallbearers at his funeral included Billy Wilder, Tony Curtis and Cary Grant.  He was interred in Forrest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills.

Marilyn attended the 17th Golden Globe Awards held on Tuesday, March 8th at the Cocoanut Grove, Ambassador Hotel, when she won as Best Actress for the comedy Some Like It Hot. Looking every inch the movie star, photographs show just how elated she was that night, as if she were on top of the world.

A year later she returned on March 5th 1962 on the arm of Jose Bolanos, but some of the most iconic pictures of her that night saw her with friend and fellow actor Rock Hudson. She wore a shimmering green evening gown with earrings given to her by Frank Sinatra. The gown was one of the many items auctioned off at the famous Christie’s 1999 auction, fetching $96,000. Most recently, her 1961 World Film Favourite Golden Globe was auctioned off for a staggering and record breaking $250,000.

REMEMBERING FRANK SINATRA

Today, 14th May 2018, marks 20 years since the passing of one of the greatest all round American entertainers in history, Frank Sinatra.

Sinatra is one of the best selling musical artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide.  His hits include: “Come Fly With Me,” “New York, New York,” “Something Stupid,” “Strangers In The Night,” and the ever popular “My Way.”  He was also a major motion picture star, with more than 40 film credits to his name, including an Oscar Winning performance in the classic “From Here To Eternity,” co starring Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster.

There is speculation that Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra met as early as 1954 during her marriage to Joe DiMaggio.  DiMaggio and Sinatra were certainly friends during this period, but with no photographic evidence, it’s harder to prove.  What we do know for a fact is that they became firm friends in 1960 during the shooting of Marilyn’s last completed picture “The Misfits,” shot on location in Reno, Nevada.  It is even widely believed that the pair had a brief fling during that hot summer.

Sinatra was very generous with Marilyn, gifting her emerald earings which she wore to the Golden Globe Awards.

“I live here all alone with my snowball, my little white poodle – he was given to me by my dear old friend Frank Sinatra. I call him Maf.”

Frank Sinatra gave Maf (a subtle reference to Sinatra’s connections to the Mafia) to Marilyn in 1961 while in New York. Marilyn would let Maf sleep on a white fur coat given to her by Arthur Miller. Maf was sent to Marilyn to live with her in Hollywood once she bought a house in Brentwood and intended to make it her permanent home.  After Marilyn passed, Maf went to live with Sinatra’s secretary, Gloria Lovell.

Aside from being friends, Sinatra was one of Marilyn’s very favourite entertainers, when asked directly who was her favourite singing star, Monroe quipped “well frankly… I’d have to say Frank!”

Sadly, but touchingly, Sinatra’s records were on Marilyn’s turntable when her body was disovered the night she passed away.

Although 20 years have passed, Sinatra remains popular to this day, the epitome of “cool”… the “Chairman Of The Board”… his velvet singing tones and suave persona will live on in the hearts and minds of his legions of fans, old and new forever.

Rest in peace Francis Albert.
