HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACK LEMMON

Jack Lemmon February 8th 1925 – June 27th 2001

Today we are wishing the wonderful, irreplaceable and magnificant Mr Jack Lemmon many happy returns on what would have been his 95th Birthday.

Jack needs absolutely no introduction, as I can safely say that he is regarded as one of Marilyn’s most beloved co-stars having acted alongside her in the iconic 1959 comedy “Some Like It Hot.”
Of course, he was so much more than “Daphne” the bull fiddle playing musician on the run from the Mob.. he had a lengthy and highly asteemed career spanning 6 decades, he was a two time Academy Award winner and up until recently, held the record for the most number of Golden Globe nominations in history (beaten only by Meryl Streep.)

Some of his film credits include: “The Apartment,” “The Odd Couple,” “The China Syndrome,” “Days Of Wine And Roses,” “Save The Tiger,” “Grumpy Old Men” and “Glengarry Glen Ross,” to name but a few.

It’s no coincedence that “Some Like It Hot” Director and writer Billy Wilder once said “Happiness is working with Jack Lemmon”, he was regarded as one of the nicest, hardest working and most respected Actors in the business. In turn, he never had an unkind word to say about any of his fellow co stars throughout the years and always especially spoke highly of Marilyn. He was once quoted as saying:

“Marilyn had an incredible charisma that was so rare, I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it. She had a lot of talent as an actress and she used that talent to the best of her ability as well as her skills as a comedienne, which worked out marvelously for her as with that combined, she created that certain magic on film. I loved working with her and a lot of people say that is clear in our scenes together. I absolutely adored her and we got on wonderfully.”

Marilyn attended the 17th Golden Globe Awards held on Tuesday, March 8th at the Cocoanut Grove, Ambassador Hotel, when she won as Best Actress for the comedy Some Like It Hot. Looking every inch the movie star, photographs show just how elated she was that night, as if she were on top of the world.

A year later she returned on March 5th 1962 on the arm of Jose Bolanos, but some of the most iconic pictures of her that night saw her with friend and fellow actor Rock Hudson. She wore a shimmering green evening gown with earrings given to her by Frank Sinatra. The gown was one of the many items auctioned off at the famous Christie’s 1999 auction, fetching $96,000. Most recently, her 1961 World Film Favourite Golden Globe was auctioned off for a staggering and record breaking $250,000.

SCOTLAND STILL LIKES IT HOT!

Marilyn Remembered’s own Lorraine Nicol recently attended a screening of the 1959 classic “Some Like It Hot” starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and directed by Billy Wilder.

The screening took place at the GFT (Glasgow Film Theatre) in Scotland, United Kingdom.  The venue holds just under 200 people and Lorraine was thrilled to see the films showing was a near sell out!

“I’ve been fortunate enough to see many Marilyn Monroe films on the big screen, including “Some Like It Hot” and what always astounds me is that even after all these years, these classic films can still draw in the big crowds.  There were people of all ages and generations filling the theatre with bellowing laughter and thunderous applause!  As nice as it is to watch these movies in the comfort of your own home, nothing beats seeing this classic comedy on the big screen with so many likeminded people having the time of their life!  Scotland clearly loves all things Marilyn!”
