MEMORIES OF MARILYN: JACK CARDIFF

MEMORIES OF MARILYN:

JACK CARDIFF (CINEMATOGRAPHER)

“She was practically perfect to photograph. You know, a third rate artist will draw somebody’s face with the eyes the same size in the right position, but no two eyes are alik on a human face — one will be a bit smaller or a slightly different shape — and a real artist will capture the essence in getting a likeness of the person. However if you could measure Marilyn’s eyes and facial features, they were almost perfect.
The end of her nose was tipped up a bit, but it was charming, and she was absolutely lovely. She photographed perfectly from any direction.”

MEMORIES OF MARILYN: RAND BROOKS

MEMORIES OF MARILYN:
RAND BROOKS (CO-STAR FROM “LADIES OF THE CHORUS.”)

“Marilyn was awfully sweet and she did a good job. She always turned up on time, she worked hard, she knew her lines, and her singing was more than adequate. However, she hadn’t had much film training, so I’d move her back and tell her where the light was, because things like hitting your marks can be disturbing to young actors and actresses. By that time I’d had quite a lot of experience making movies, but I wasn’t about to upstage Marilyn.”

MEMORIES OF MARILYN: ROBERT RYAN

Memories of Marilyn: Robert Ryan (co-star in “Clash By Night.”)

“I got the feeling she was a frightened, lonely little girl who was trying awfully hard. She always seemed to be so mournful looking around the set, and I’d always try to cheer her up. She never went out with the rest of us socially after work. I remember, after we finished the picture, she sent me a box of candy. I don’t know why.”

MEMORIES OF MARILYN: ANGELA ALLEN

Angela Allen, script supervisor on “The Misfits”:

“What was so amazing about her was the thing that she projected on the screen. She seemed so ordinary when doing a scene, and then you’d go to the rushes and see her up there, so different, like no-one else.. it was nearly incredible. The legend…. suddenly made sense.”
